We spent the first part of our Friday night date working on this piano… I was amazed at the pile of Q-tips on the floor after we finished cleaning and shining up the interior. Brigham did the exterior touch up on Saturday and is going to do the action work this week.

It was a trade in that we received last week. We’ll post a video soon. It’s a 5’4 Black Wurlitzer grand. It’ll be under $5,000… Brigham hasn’t given me a final price yet. He always likes to finish all of the regulation, voicing, tuning, cleaning, etc. before he decides on a price. Watch for a video & price next week…

Why do some pianos have keys that feel heavy and some that feel light?

The weight required to make a key go down is referred to as the “touch.” On different pianos it might vary from 40 grams to 70 grams (26 grams make up one ounce). Differences in leverage, mass of various parts, and frictional resistance yield piano actions that play very differently.

But don’t think that a lighter touch is always better. In fact, most advanced musicians like to feel a touch that is anywhere from 52 to 58 grams. If a piano is too light, there’s no feedback from the piano back to the player. And if the touch is too heavy, arms and fingers tire easily and sensitive control is gone.

Some adjustments can be made to change a piano’s touchweight. If you’re interested, ask Brigham, 801-830-0011.

Occasionally, Brigham will have a late work night to finish up a project to meet a deadline. On one such night, Brigham Jr. wanted to be with his dad the whole time. He wouldn’t give up and go to bed despite his exhaustion. Finally, he just curled up in his spider man blanket and decided he’d sleep right next to dad…. The moment begged for photography. Our little Briggy likes to tell everyone that it is “his” piano shop because he is “Brigham” and it’s “Brigham’s” Piano Shop. We don’t argue with him!

We include free delivery (to Utah and SLC counties) with all of our new and like-new piano sales. Brigham is meticulous about wrapping and caring for pianos during delivery. Above, you can see him fastening the straps over a mammoth piano moving blanket (there was actually another blanket under that one)!

Once it’s safely in place, you’ll usually get to enjoy a little music by Brigham as well. It is always such an exciting time to have a piano delivered. I love to watch the joy of children when a piano is rolled into their home!

To help us protect your piano as much as possible during delivery, we have a few guidelines in regards to moving:

-First floor only, please. Upon special request we are able to move pianos up or down stairs, but it requires special equipment, so please notify Brigham BEFORE delivery of any stairs. One or two steps (such as a front porch) are usually not a problem. Extra fees may be applicable for stair deliveries.

-Tight turns (such as through some hallways) are not always possible. Call if you have any questions.

-Delivery is possible outside of UT/SLC counties at very reasonable prices. Call Brigham for a bid on delivery outside of UT/SLC counties.

*For delivery of our refurbished pianos and all other pianos we sell, Brigham has very reasonable rates. Call for a bid.

*National moving is possible as well! We are able to arrange delivery anywhere in the US. Contact us for pricing.

We can also move out your old piano if you are upgrading. Give us a call to see if our current selection of pianos for sale matches your family’s needs. 801-830-0011

Here’s an image I captured while Brigham was prepping a Yamaha for sale. He spends a lot of time getting his pianos ready. He tunes, regulates and makes any needed adjustments to have them precision ready for clients. In addition to his standard prep, he can accommodate requests to adjust touch and tone to meet musical preference. Brigham doesn’t just un-box and tune his new and reconditioned pianos… he labors over each one until he feels it is “just right” and meets his high standard of excellence! Come and try them out and tell us what you think.

A previous tuning client called to see how quickly Brigham could come and haul away this piano that she felt was not in sufficient repair to merit selling it. Indeed, it needs quite a lot of work… which is Brigham’s specialty. She was thrilled to have it moved out quickly to meet her landlord’s deadline and Brigham was happy to have a new “project”. Keep him in mind if you’ve got one of those pianos that you think is beyond the effort to sell. We’d love to come pick it up and transform it into a musical instrument that a family will love!
