Highlighting a Hailun Grand at the National Convention

We just received our first boxed and brand new Hailun grand to sell.  Brigham has been so busy that it is sitting in our living room still boxed up, waiting for him to open up our beautiful new gift!  I can’t wait to have it set up.  While I wait for his schedule to have a free moment… here’s a glimpse of another Hailun Grand that Brigham played at the National Piano Technician’s Guild this past summer.  He is with Bosillios Strmec, Haulun-USA President, who talks about the unique features of the Hailun Grand.

National Guild Chooses Hailun Action Model to Test Piano Technicians

The following article used with permission from the Hailun-USA blog.

Over the past couple of years Hailun Pianos has worked in cooperation with the Piano Technicians Guild (PTG) to develop a vertical action model. This model is made to exact specifications required for the vertical regulation section of the PTG Technical Exam. Some of the features include three keys, adjustable hammer rail, correct action ratio, functional sustain and soft pedals, string target, and case parts. These models may be master regulated for exam use and are also excellent for training purposes and retail display.

After an initial production run, some modifications were requested by the PTG. Recently at the Hailun factory, Frank Emerson, chief designer for Hailun, and Mike Carraher, technical consultant, had several meetings with Hu Jianping, production supervisor for vertical pianos. Jianping, also known as Bill, oversees the project and personally assembles all the action models. When asked about the lengthy process of producing these models, Mike Carraher replied, “Early delays with this project were the result of poor communication. Coming here to the factory and meeting face to face with Bill, we are finally able to work as a team to make sure all the changes are correct. We look forward to a continuing relationship with Bill and other key people at the factory.”
These models are available for purchase directly from the Piano Technicians Guild at www.ptg.org . Hailun USA appreciates the opportunity to partner with PTG on this project and looks forward to future endeavors.

Unsolicited Praise for Hailun

Please find below a post originally published July 11th 2010 on http://pc.morganisms.net/ by Mr. Mike Morgan about his piano shopping experience in St. Paul, MN.

Wells Pianos and Hailun pianos

11 July 2010, 6:34 pm

And now for something that has nothing to do with politics.   An unrequested endorsment for a piano store, a store owner, and a piano manufacturer.

Very recently, I met a diligent and hardworking young man, Kieran Wells, who owns a business selling pianos.  His store, Wells Pianos, is located on Grand Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Kieran sells various pianos, new and used, including some of very expensive names like Steinway and Sons, but his best value, in my view, is the Hailun piano.

Wells Pianos in St. Paul, MNWells Pianos in St. Paul, MN

I’ve been shopping for pianos a lot lately. Unfortunately, I didn’t find out about Wells Pianos until after I decided to buy a higher end grand piano. More on the piano I did buy, elsewhere, later.

Suffice it to say that it is too bad I didn’t find out about Wells Piano sooner, because, among the sundry high end pianos Kieran offers is a brand called Hailun. Hailun is a Chinese made piano, which makes it a tough sell with so many inferior Chinese made products being sold in the United States, including very low end Chinese pianos. Indeed, when I was shopping for a piano, I had looked at some Chinese made pianos, and would have bought one if I had thought they were a good value.  I looked at new and used Cristofori/Lyrica (a store brand made in China), Falcone, and some others. They were not, in my opinion, a good value, and I didn’t like their sound anyway.

I also looked at other pianos, like Kawai, Yamaha, and Steinway. The Steiways were very impressive, but way out of my price league.

The Hailun piano, on the other hand, is a high end Chinese piano, offered at a very good price. It is more expensive than the ridiculously low priced Falcone, but it sounds better and is much higher quality. (more…)

Hailun Innovation #3-Cold Pressed Hammerheads

One of the most important parts of the piano is the hammerhead. Recent studies by several leading felt and hammerhead makers has revealed why the hammerheads used by piano factories in the nineteen twenties seemed to be superior to modern, mass produced hammerheads. Discerning piano builders and even pianists have long recognized the value of these hammerheads when found in good condition. Modern mass production relies on the use of heat during the compression process to facilitate that glue hardens faster. However, this process has adverse effects on the elasticity of the felt structure. Today, even makers of highest quality instruments rely on technicians in the field to prepare pianos (i.e. enhance their sound) by treating such hammers with chemicals.

The cold-pressed hammer production process does not alter the microstructure of the felt and allows for a hammerhead that is much more elastic. It ensures much higher tension on the surface of the hammerhead and provides the the ideal basis for optimal intonation.

Hailun Innovation #2-PAS Keybed System

PAS Keybed System For Upright Pianos (Permanency Accuracy Stability)

In 2007 Hailun Piano Co. wanted to further increase the quality level and guarantee of longevity of its upright pianos. Performance upright pianos can be sensitive to temporary oscillations of humidity and temperature, and the effects can be minor shifts of the piano action (i.e. the mechanism that connects the keys to the hammerhead). Professional pianists are sensitive to such minor shifts and can sometimes detect them. Over time it is also possible for the wood to shift its form and cause a permanent change in the action. In order to ensure that the many combining parts that make up the action of an upright piano maintain a stable platfo, Hailun Piano Company invented the Permanency- Accuracy- Stability Keybed System (PAS). This is an aluminum keybed structure that allows the piano action to be resistant to external influences and ensures that the instrument can be used for many years without concern.

Hailun Innovation #1-Hybrid Performance Pianos

As we begin selling the Hailun USA brand, we are going to highlight some of it’s outstanding features and innovations on our blog.  Here is the first of 4 posts in a series of Hailun innovations and points of interest.

Stephen Paulello

Over the years Hailun Piano Co. has made it a practice to engage piano technology authorities from Europe and the United States and combine their experience and know-how with the factory’s dedicated and skilled craftsmen and workers. The goal was to offer to pianists highest quality instruments that customers could otherwise only enjoy by acquiring instruments that were built in Europe. These hybrid pianos rely not only on the cost advantage currently attainable in China, but on a highly skilled team of local engineers and workers, and a commitment to quality to present themselves as a real alternative of instruments several times their price. At their best they offer a sound, consistency, and quality mostly available from piano makers several times the cost of a Hailun.

The most recent example is the work of Mr. Stephen Paulello. Stephen Paulello is both a concert pianist, who has won numerous international piano competitions, and also a university professor for piano and chamber music. He completed his education as a piano technician with Bechstein and Steinway & Sons and was in charge of concert service for Bechstein in Paris. After a period in Germany spent developing his piano building skills, he started designing and building his own upright and grand pianos. Commenting on his own designs, he says: ‘I wanted to do something different, something new to develop an alternative for pianists’. Indeed, in each and every respect he has succeeded. His experience was gained from 28 years of personal research into the various aspects of piano building. He learned by restoring, repairing and improving upright and grand pianos, as well as through optimization of the strings and actions.Stephen Paulello’s patents and grand piano designs have won numerous awards, including a BA from the French Ministry for Culture. He is also responsible for the training and education of piano technicians in France, including the master associations AFARP & ITEMM. In order to meet Mr. Paulello’s requirements the factory invested in larger CNC machines and with the help of his colleague Claire Pichet, a specialized CAD and robotics engineer, ensured that his designs were properly implemented. The result was the new model Hailun 218 semi-concert grand. Numerous pianists and piano builders already appreciate the instrument. Several institutions have already procured a Hailun 218 for their performance venues.
