The hammers on this Samick baby grand were deeply grooved and very uneven. Taking the string cuts/grooves out of the hammers is the first step to significantly improving the tone of the piano. Leveling the hammer line (including raising them to the ideal distance from the strings) is one step in creating the proper touch. It also improves touch consistency from one note to the next. The above picture was taken after I reshaped the hammers but before I leveled the hammer line. Below is after I leveled the hammer line.
