Sometimes I come across piano keys that are PEELING! Here is such a case. This family told me the keys had been just fine for 30 years or so, then suddenly within a period of about 6 months, they started to peel up. I took the keys with me (not the whole piano-piano keys come out individually), I took them back to my shop, I had them for about 2 weeks, and voila! Beautiful and new again!
These keys are plastic, but in spite of what that may imply, it is the same material used on high-end pianos. It is a different, more advanced type of plastic than that used originally on this piano. That is to say, it won’t peel in a few decades. It is also really hard. The lip on the front of the key is very difficult to chip. -Brigham
